The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) issued an order stating that no vehicle would be insured without a pollution certificate. IRDA has issued a circular in this regard on 20 August 2020.
The regulator said the Central Pollution Control Board has expressed concern over the state of compliance with the aforesaid directive of the Supreme Court in Delhi and the NCR. He asked to ensure that the directions of the Supreme Court are followed honestly. Special attention should be paid to it in Delhi-NCR.
What is a PUC certificate
It is a certificate stating that the standards of pollution control arising from vehicles are met. Pollution standard levels are set for all types of motor vehicles in the country. Once a vehicle has successfully passed the PUC inspection, a certificate is issued to the owner of the vehicle. With this certificate you will know that the pollution of your vehicle is at a certain level. It is not harmful to the environment. According to government regulations, all vehicles are required to obtain a mandatory PUC certificate.
The rules will apply in Delhi-NCR
This is the second time that the IRDAI has sent a letter to the CMDOs of General Boundaries and General Insurance Companies to comply with the Supreme Court order. Earlier, such an order was sent in July 2018. In the new order, the IRDA said, “The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has expressed concern over compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court in the National Capital Region (Delhi-NCR).
In view of the increasing pollution of vehicles, IRDAI in particular has instructed all insurance companies to ensure that special attention is paid to compliance with the Supreme Court directives in Delhi-NCR. Under the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2019 issued last year, violating PUC standards will result in a fine of Rs 10,000. However, the new Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act is yet to be implemented across India. PUC certification is mandatory for all vehicles in India.
